Meet Lyndsey: Using UX Design to build better experiences for her community

You don’t have to work at a tech giant to benefit from UX. Based in the heart of Iowa, Lyndsey Wathen is applying the principles from her Professional Diploma to her role in local government. By treating citizens as “users,” she’s making everything from community event planning to park walk-throughs more efficient and intentional. Professional Diploma in UX Design: Comprehensive, current and AI-focused

The industry-standard diploma in UX design: learn the full process, from research to prototyping, with content updated to reflect the expanding role of AI.

Lyndsey Wathen, The Assistant Director redefining public service through UX

Many people come to the UX Design Institute looking to pivot into a tech company or a digital agency. But for Lyndsey Wathen, a Graphic Designer based in Jefferson, Iowa, the goal wasn’t just to change her job, it was to change how her community interacts with the world around them.

Lyndsey recently completed the Professional Diploma in UX Design, and she is proving that “design thinking” isn’t just for Silicon Valley; it’s a powerful tool for public service and community development.

Designing Better Communities: UX in the Public Sector

Today, Lyndsey serves as the Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation for the City of Jefferson. It’s a role she jokingly refers to as being a “real-life Leslie Knope,” but the work she is doing is transforming the experience of thousands of citizens.

By applying UX principles to recreation and event planning, Lyndsey is looking at public spaces through a brand-new lens. It’s no longer just about the “look” of a flyer or a park sign; it’s about the user experience:

  • Thoughtful Registration: Streamlining the process for citizens to sign up for programmes.
  • Spatial Plotting: Using “walk-throughs” of physical spaces to plot the desired customer route.
  • Data-Driven Updates: Creating tools to improve the customer experience while knowing exactly when it’s the right time to update a tradition.

Training in User Experience design has made me a better Designer, Planner, and Program Director. It’s given me a really good project structure to work with.

From Graphic Design to Strategic UX: Bridging the gap

For Lyndsey, the decision to enroll in the diploma wasn’t just about adding a line to her resume; it was about finding a methodology for the skills she had practiced for years. Despite her experience, she wanted a framework that would turn “designing” into “problem-solving.”

She found that structure within the Professional Diploma in UX Design. Rather than a quick bootcamp, the programme offered a university credit-rated curriculum that provided a “why” behind every decision.

My time with the UX Design Institute has given me a really good project structure to work with. I’m so much more aware of processes and how clients interact with programs, spaces, and online portals.

What stood out most to Lyndsey was the immediate ROI of the curriculum. She was immediately able to apply what she learned to the projects she was working on, while balancing her role at a small university, given the flexible nature of the self-paced diploma and the support from her 1:1 mentor.

I completed the course while working remotely… and was immediately able to apply what I learned to the projects I was working on!

The diploma offered her the perfect blend of academic rigor and professional flexibility:

  • The Power of Process: She moved beyond aesthetics to master the full UX lifecycle, from deep user research to interactive prototyping.
  • Expert Validation: Learning from experienced UX designers gave her the confidence to advocate for user-centric changes in her local government role.
  • A Standard of Excellence: Earning a qualification backed by Glasgow Caledonian University meant she wasn’t just learning a tool, she was mastering a globally recognised standard.

“Training in User Experience design has made me a better Designer, Planner, and Program Director. It gives structured thought behind every design decision.”

Lyndsey’s story is a powerful reminder that UX design is a way of thinking. She is bringing a community centre into the next phase of technology by showing that empathy-led design can strengthen leadership and community development.

Whether she is planning a volunteer event or redesigning an online portal for the town, Lyndsey is no longer just “making things.” She is solving problems.
