Head of Design & Marketing at Deblur Ltd

Helen Peak

What’s your career background?

I’ve worked in social research, marketing and graphic design.

What interested you about UX?

Moving into UX has been my only career goal for the last three years.

Why did you choose to study UX with us?

UX brings together many areas I enjoy; researching, talking to people, problem-solving, designing, and copywriting. This is why it appeals to me.

Why did you choose the Professional Diploma in UX?

I wanted to do an online course, something more in-depth without having to return to university. I had to be able to work full-time so I needed something flexible.

Since completing the course, how has your career progressed?

I feel the course increased my confidence and employability. The course exercises were very useful for building my portfolio, plus they made the UX process more structured in my head.

I actually gave a presentation about the Professional Diploma at a UX design networking event. My current boss was there, he looked up my portfolio online and reached out to me to say he was looking for someone like me. I now work at an IT consultancy company called Delbur, which is on the Scottish Government’s CivTech accelerator scheme.

Would you recommend the course to others? Why?

Yes. I believe there’s something for everyone in UX, just find the area that makes you happy.

I really enjoy working on the entire UX process. I’ve also noticed an increased demand for specialist UI skills, so I’ve actually decided to undertake the Professional Certificate in Visual and UI Design with the UX Design Institute too.
