But for Lyndsey Wathen, a Graphic Designer based in Jefferson, Iowa, the goal wasn\u2019t just to change her job, it was to change how her community interacts with the world around them.<\/p>\n<p>Lyndsey recently completed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uxdesigninstitute.com\/courses\/ux-design\"><b>Professional Diploma in UX Design<\/b><\/a>, and she is proving that &#8220;design thinking&#8221; isn\u2019t just for Silicon Valley; it\u2019s a powerful tool for public service and community development.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Designing Better Communities: UX in the Public Sector<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Today, Lyndsey serves as the Assistant Director of Parks &amp; Recreation for the City of Jefferson. It\u2019s a role she jokingly refers to as being a &#8220;real-life Leslie Knope,&#8221; but the work she is doing is transforming the experience of thousands of citizens.<\/p>\n<p>By applying UX principles to recreation and event planning, Lyndsey is looking at public spaces through a brand-new lens. It\u2019s no longer just about the &#8220;look&#8221; of a flyer or a park sign; it\u2019s about the <b>user experience:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Thoughtful Registration:<\/b> Streamlining the process for citizens to sign up for programmes.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Spatial Plotting:<\/b> Using &#8220;walk-throughs&#8221; of physical spaces to plot the desired customer route.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Data-Driven Updates:<\/b> Creating tools to improve the customer experience while knowing exactly <i>when<\/i> it\u2019s the right time to update a tradition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Training in User Experience design has made me a better Designer, Planner, and Program Director. It\u2019s given me a really good project structure to work with.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>From Graphic Design to Strategic UX: Bridging the gap<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>For Lyndsey, the decision to enroll in the diploma wasn\u2019t just about adding a line to her resume; it was about finding a methodology for the skills she had practiced for years. Despite her experience, she wanted a framework that would turn &#8220;designing&#8221; into &#8220;problem-solving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She found that structure within the <b>Professional Diploma in UX Design<\/b>.
